Miele CM 5200 Black Countertop Coffee System Review

View Product on Amazon.com

Two of the more common names that come to mind when thinking about high-quality coffee machines are Jura and Miele. Miele makes a number of built-in machines like restaurants and shops use. These machines can produce dozens of cups from a single fill of the water tank. When you want something you can use at home that doesn’t require professional installation, you should look at one like the Miele CM 5200 Black Countertop Coffee Machine (View on Amazon.com).

Miele designed the 5200 to work as a complete and total bean machine. A bean hopper locks in the aroma and flavor of those beans until you choose a grinding setting. The hopper can keep those beans fresher than a bag could. It then adds water from the reservoir to the brewing chamber and pours in the beans. You’ll get the freshest cup that you ever imagined with the 5200 in your home.

Features

Built-in Coffee Recipes

As long as you have the right amount of beans in the hopper, you can make a standard cup of coffee with this model. The CM 5200 comes with three other built-in coffee recipes that you can choose. Make cappuccino, espresso or latte drinks.

Automatic Timers

Though you cannot use the automatic timers while in eco mode, you can use those timers in comfort mode. These timers let you inform the machine when it should come on and when it should turn off. You can even set it up to turn itself off after you leave for work.

Water Settings

With this Miele model, you can make two changes regarding water settings. One lets you decide on the amount of water added to each cup, and the other lets you choose the temperature of the water. Set that water temperature to high, medium or low.

61-Ounce Water Reservoir

The CM 5200 comes with a water reservoir that can hold up to 61 ounces. If you use a standard eight-ounce mug, you can make just over seven cups from one tank. For single espresso shots, you can make more than 10 shots from a single fill.

Hot Water Spout

A dedicated hot water spout sits on one side of the machine. When you press a button for hot water, it dispenses water into any cup or glass you place beneath the spout. That water lets you make tea and most powdered drink mixes.

Removable Drip Tray

The drip tray that sits under your coffee mugs does a great job of catching drips and spills. It also features even grates that hold your mugs in place. Remove that drip tray to clean out the residue and reduce odors.

Removable Waste Container

The CM 5200 also comes with a removable waste container that fits inside. Waste and old beans move into that container to keep those in the hopper fresh. That container pops out of the machine for fast and convenient cleaning.

Built-in Cup Warmer

Thanks to a built-in cup warmer located on the top of the machine, you can keep mugs warm. Those warmer mugs retain the heat from the machine to keep your coffee warmer. That warmth also better retains the overall taste of your coffee.

LCD Display

Every time that you turn the rotary knob on top, you can view exactly what changes you made via the LCD display, which is also on top. As an added bonus, this display also tells you when to dump the waste container or clean the drip tray.

Bypass Chamber

The 5200 comes with a bypass chamber and a bypass door that lets you make coffee from any ground coffee or coffee powder. You use just one scoop to make a single cup. Miele gives you a small plastic scoop to measure out those grounds.

Locking Feature

Keep your kids safe with its locking feature. This feature lets you lock the machine down. You can then come back anytime you want, make a new cup and send it back into lock down mode.

Hardness Test

To help your coffee taste better, Miele gives you a water hardness testing kit. Use that strip to determine the hardness of your water. Once the machine knows the hardness level, it will adjust itself to make sure that each cup brewed lets you taste the full flavor of the coffee and not your water.

Pros

Convenient Setting Changes: Conveniently change some of the most important settings via the machine’s simple buttons. Miele lets you make a single cup or two cups in one cycle. You can also select a button to double the amount poured in each mug.

Eco Mode: Choose the eco mode setting to conserve energy. Once the machine registers that it went a specific time without use, it will enter eco mode and use less energy. A comfort mode setting will force the 5200 to shut down after an extended period of inactivity.

Lots of Program Settings: With its various program settings, you can make the perfect cup of coffee based off your preferences. Change how hot the water comes out, the amount of coffee used and even the overall strength.

Easy Cleaning: The CM 5200 comes with both a removable drip tray and a removable waste container. That waste container holds the old beans that the machine used. The drip tray catches any drips or liquids that spill out of the machine or over your cup.

Included Milk Flask: Thanks to the included milk flask, you can keep milk cold for making froth or foam for topping cappuccinos and other drinks.

Cons

Limited Support: Miele makes a number of coffee machines, but it no longer manufactures the CM 5200. While it still offers some support for customers, you may find that getting replacement parts or even answers to your questions is hard.

Only Four Drink Options: Many people buy automatic coffee centers because they can experiment with settings, flavors and coffee types. Though the CM 5200 does make some delicious coffee drinks, it only has four built-in recipes.

High Price: The high price of this model might turn you off too. It comes with features you won’t find on cheaper models though.

Final Verdict: Should You Buy This Model?

Before we recommend a coffee center or coffee machine, we look at a number of factors, including how much it costs, the features it comes with an its overall ease of use. We found that the Miele CM 5200 has a high ratio of features for a coffee center in this price range. Though it lacks a touchscreen like some more expensive models feature, it does come loaded with settings for adjusting water temperature, coffee strength and even cup size. You can use the rotary knob to change those settings, and its digital display shows you each one.

We also like that it comes with four integrated recipes for quickly making coffee drinks like espresso and cappuccino. With its double shot feature, you can get more caffeine when you need it. This feature pours a double shot of espresso in your cup or mug. You’ll also get a stainless-steel milk flask and a removable drip tray. If you want to make amazing coffee drinks that will impress all your friends, invest in the Miele CM 5200 Black Countertop Coffee System.

Comparable Models to Consider

Gaggia Anima Deluxe Automatic Coffee Machine

For espresso and specialty drinks based on espresso, you can’t go wrong with the Gaggia Anima Deluxe Automatic Coffee Machine. This machine comes with buttons for making those drinks in seconds, but it also comes with a hot water button. It produces enough hot water for making a cup of tea or rinsing out a cup to keep your coffee hot. The 60-ounce water tank can make all the drinks you need, and you can use the menu button to change your water temperature, adjust the milk settings and aroma level for the perfect cup.

Miele CM 6310 Countertop Coffee Machine

If you like the look and the way that the CM 5200 responds, you might upgrade to the CM 6310 from Miele. This model comes with the company’s patented OneTouch for Two, which helps you make two cups together from the same settings, but you can also adjust the settings for one of those cups. Available in a modern white finish that won’t show fingerprints, it also features a new aroma system for producing more aroma from coffee beans. It even has an integrated cup warmer for keeping your cups heated to the right temperature.

Jura Impressa J9 One Touch TFT Coffee Machine

Adjustable coffee spouts on the J9 push together for filling a single cup faster and then spread apart for filling two cups simultaneously. The TFT display works effortlessly with the rotary switch to make selecting the right type of coffee and other settings a breeze. You can always view your current settings and make changes via that display. Cappuccino lovers will also like the Jura fine foam technology, which heats the steam to the optimum temperature for producing rich crema or foam. It also comes with a stainless-steel milk canister.
